My Interview with Kearney & Company Partner Phil Moore

Kearney & Company Summer 2019 Intern Clayton Ashley Interviews Partner Phil Moore

Q: For interns pursuing a career in business or IT, what resources and skills do you recommend they utilize?

A: Having an accounting degree, CPA accreditation, and a Master’s degree in information systems at Virginia Tech helped me to have the expertise in the IT side of auditing while also have the credibility with people on the financial side of auditing.

Q: Did you learn how to perform your job duties in college, or on-the-job (excel, networking, public speaking, technical skills)?

A: The main skill I learned at Virginia Tech was how to work as a part of a team. Virginia Tech incorporates a lot of group projects into its curriculum, so learning how to work as a member of a team carried over into the workplace. Knowing how to handle the stereotypical group personas and lead a group were very helpful to him.

Q: What do you wish you had known before going into your first job?

A: I wished I would’ve known how much relationships in the federal space really matter. In the corporate environment, procurements are signed quickly, and relationships seemed more important on a one to one level. Procurement processes in the federal space take a lot longer, so establishing strong relationships with the right people is advantageous and arguably more important than on the corporate level.

Q: How would you describe the Kearney culture?

A: Family oriented. Kearney is a big company, a lot bigger than we used to be, but still has the family feel. The way employees are treated feels like family, where you really feel like a member, not just as a number lost in the crowd of other employees.
